Changes to Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
We all know how much inflation has affected home prices and food prices in the past 24 months. Most disabled adult children, whether living at home with family, in an apartment on their own, or in an ICF or HCS program can’t afford to fully support themselves with a budget of $943, the current maximum SSI benefit. Today, SSI took an unprecedented step forward to alleviate some of the impact of support from others on SSI recipients’ benefits.
Social Security Administration has announced they will be “’Omitting Food from In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM) Calculations’. The final rule announces the first of several updates to the agency’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) regulations that will help people receiving and applying for SSI.” This means that “beginning September 30, 2024, the agency will no longer include food in ISM calculations.”
While we are still in the process of understanding all the implications of this change, we are actively researching the new regulations and will provide ongoing updates as more information becomes available.
